Software Engineer (PHP/Symfony)

If you love books and building things on the web, we are sure you would enjoy:

  • Building web-based tools used by book publishers to make their job easier

Our team is currently building a service that monitors changes in book data across selected retail sites. When we detect a problem with one of our clients’ titles, we alert them and help them proactively address it. We face interesting challenges in back-end processing, query optimization, building efficient user interfaces, producing actionable data visualizations and reports, and in other areas across all levels of the application stack.

With this and other exciting projects underway, it’s a great time to join the Firebrand team!

At Firebrand, you will:

  • Contribute directly to the architecture and implementation of multiple Symfony-based PHP projects
  • Be responsible for PHP back-end as well as JavaScript and HTML front-end code
  • Work with and occasionally contribute to open source software packages that we use in our projects
  • Build automated functional and unit tests
  • Participate in agile planning sessions using Jira and related tools
  • Document useful practices and tools to share with the team

Your qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 2+ years of experience with modern PHP code and testing
  • Experience with the Symfony framework (version 3+) is highly desirable
  • Experience with database development and optimization (we use PostgreSQL and MongoDB)
  • Experience with PHP 7.1+, JavaScript, HTML, PHPUnit, Composer, Node.js, Webpack, and Linux
  • Experience with Scrum or other agile processes, and with Jira or similar tools
  • Excellent communication skills

This position is either remote from anywhere in the continental United States with occasional travel required, or based out of our office in Newburyport, MA, depending on your preference.

Application Support Analyst

Firebrand Technologies is seeking candidates for a Tier 1 Application Support Analyst position to work with our Title Management product. As a software and technology services company, we’ve been helping publishers handle their internal workflows, digital distribution, and marketing efforts for more than 30 years. Our clients are very dear to us and we go above and beyond to make sure that their needs are met.

Our ideal candidate will embrace this philosophy and do their best to help publishers succeed. This will entail some combination of investigative work into why a process didn’t go as expected, helping clients troubleshoot issues with industry trading partners, training users on best practices, and determining how to best address publisher queries.

This is a remote position for someone located in the United States. If a candidate prefers to work in our office in Newburyport, MA, that is also an option once it is deemed safe to reopen the office.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop a deep understanding of our applications, particularly Title Management
  • Evaluate, prioritize, and resolve client issues in a courteous, professional, and timely manner
  • Investigate reported issues, work with clients to understand the full scope, and write up a comprehensive summary in our case management system
  • Query, back up, and restore databases in MS SQL Server
  • Manage a caseload of long-term tickets, documenting progress and providing clients with status updates
  • Seek opportunities to improve workflows and expand internal documentation

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment

Preferences:

  • Working knowledge of MSSQL
  • Experience working in Zendesk and Jira for case management
  • Experience with Title Management, Crystal Reports or VisualCron
